It is hard for Catholics not be offended by recent insensitive comments made by ESPN Anchorwoman Dana Jacobson. Many Catholics are outraged and are calling for a boycott of ESPN. They are demanding Jacobson's head on a stick as well. Is this the best response? If you are alumni of Notre Dame, perhaps (The context of Jacobson's F bombs" were an attempt to diss the Fighting Irish). However, I received an email suggesting an alternative. The writer says that the Christian thing to do is to pray for this woman. Also, she suggests that an appropriate act of contrition would be for Jacobson to meet with Catholics. Hard to disagree with this response. It is a positive example of love and forgiveness.
As long as there are ignorant people, bad comedians, and callous souls, there will be people making insensitive comments at the expense of Christians. When it happens, our response should be one of example and education. When I think of what works with my kids (not that I am suggesting that these people are childish, but then again they are), shouting produces negative results. Respect, calmness, and the act of teaching is a faster track to positive outcomes. Let us leverage the spotlight shining on these ugly events to teach others about Christian values of love and forgiveness. In the process, evangelize our faith.
The Anchoress has written a thoughtful reflection on the issue. It is a good read, check it out.
